A national survey of 1,000 small-business owners commissioned by the Discover Business Card rebounded slightly in December after cratering badly in November to its worst ever results. The survey measures the economic confidence of U.S. small-business owners who employ fewer than five employees.
And while John Sculley of Discover tempered the results by saying, "While we saw small improvements in economic confidence almost across the board this month, the mood still remains cautious," it's at the level of these modest businesses that we can get a glimpse of the mood of Main Street USA, don't you think?
Some of the areas that showed the most unexpected upturn in confidence are:
Biz Dev: 24% of business owners say they plan to boost spending in this area in the coming six months.
State of the economy: 12% say the economy is getting better, the highest in this category since August 2008.
Recovery estimates: 23 percent think that the economic recovery will take less than a year.
